Stemming is a linguistic technique that reduces words to their base form, or stem. While it can be a quick and efficient method, stemming often produces non-meaningful roots, leading to potential inaccuracies. For example, “happily” might be reduced to “happi”, which does not convey the same meaning. Despite its limitations, stemming remains valuable in scenarios where speed is prioritized over precision, such as in large-scale text processing tasks like sentiment analysis, spam classification, and information retrieval such as restaurant reviews.
