Emotion Analysis

Emotion analysis is the process of identifying and categorising the emotional tone or affect expressed in a piece of text. It goes beyond traditional sentiment analysis (which typically classifies text as positive, negative, or neutral) by detecting more specific emotions such as joy, anger, sadness, fear, disgust, and sometimes others like surprise or trust.

Emotion analysis can be particularly useful in contexts such as:

  • Social media monitoring: Understanding public reactions and emotions in real-time for events, campaigns, or trending topics.
  • Content and media analysis: Assessing how emotions are conveyed in literature, movies, or speeches to gauge audience reactions.
  • Customer feedback: Identifying how customers feel about a product or service, allowing companies to address concerns or amplify positive experiences.
  • Healthcare: Detecting emotional states in patient narratives or doctor-patient interactions, providing additional insights into mental well-being.

IBM Watson Natural Language Understanding, for example, offers emotion detection by recognising emotions in text and assigning a confidence score to each emotion, helping users gain deeper insights into how people feel about a given topic.
